Terry Pratchett - a representation of this outstanding writer.
Some time ago one could say that accidentally, although he personally does not believe in the occurrence of cases in our lives, I came across in the book read at that time mention of an author whose name was Terry Pratchett.
He was a British writer born on April 28, 1948 in Beaconsfield and died March 12, 2015 in Broad Chalke specializing in fantasy and science fiction genres.
The first of his novels entitled The carpet was published in 1971, while the first book in the series, which I intend to describe as the first to you: "Magic Color" was released in 1983.
According to statistics, at the beginning of 2007, 50 million books were translated, translated into 33 languages, and in the 90s his books were first in terms of the number of copies sold in Great Britain. Despite the passage of years, the novelist does not give the podium and remains in second place as the artist most often chosen by readers.
Mr. Terry Pratchett, or rather Sir Terence David John Pratchett, has been awarded many honors for his works. One of them is the honorary title Sir, mentioned by me, received in 2008 from Queen Elizabeth. While receiving this title, he said that in order for the title to be completely true he should have a proper weapon for it. Initially, words spoken playfully began to take on executive power, and in 2010 a sword project was created, the implementation of which he decided to undertake himself. In one of the rooms of his home he created a makeshift furnace where he smelted the acquired iron ore and forged the blade of his sword. When building his noble weapon, he used expert opinions. Terry added a piece of meteor, or rather iron obtained from it, which he himself found while walking in the garden to the iron ore from which he made the sword. For dozens of days, he worked hard and conscientiously, however, he finally gave his project to specialists in this field and after a few weeks he received the finished sword, so that he could enjoy his noble title.
In 1998 "for merits for literature" he was awarded the Order of the British Empire Officer class. In 2001, for the novel "Amazing Maurice and his educated rodents" received the Carnegie Medal, and his books are described as cult.
Let's go back to the author's past much earlier. Initially, his passion was astronomy, not literature, but due to poor performance in mathematics he had to give up development in this field, and he dealt with extracting and honing the talent which turned out to be the written word. The first story He wrote "The Hades Business" at the age of 13. He made his debut two years later in his first commercial job. In total, he wrote over 70 songs in the science-fiction genre, of which he was an avid defender. Despite the fulfillment in literature, the dreams of deepening knowledge about space did not cease, and Mr. Terry built an astronomical observatory in his garden, where he could calmly indulge in his additional hobby.
Mr. Terry Pratchett has also received numerous awards. In 1994, the British Book Awards in the field of Fantasy and Science Fiction. In 1998, the above-mentioned Order of the British Empire. In 1999 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Warwick, in 2001 the University of Portsmouth, in 2003 the University of Bath, and in 2004 the University of Bristol. In 2003, his work appeared on the list of the 100 best BBC books.
Personally, I really liked Mr. Terry Pratchett for his style and lightness of the written word, although I realize that it is a one-sided, platonic friendship :)
In this post I took a short introduction to the writer and outlined his work. I will devote the next parts of posts from this series to review books I have read.
